Large utility hydrogen cooled generators sometimes require a source of excitation power from an external source. This power is created from a small air-cooled generator which has its own system of cooling equipment. Unifin’s coolers in the air-cooled generator range from a single cooler horizontal design to a multi cooler vertical mount design. They remove the heat generated by electrical losses as well as frictional windage losses maintaining appropriate temperatures in the generator to protect insulation and integrity of the generator. They tend to become fouled on the tubeside and require periodic cleaning to maintain peak performance. These coolers, depending on age, may have the older “spiral” fin or may contain the newer platefin design. Most cases, when the coolers are replaced, it is more economical to replace with the modern design if it does not already exist.

Integral Fin Tube

It's What Makes Unifin Unique
Many of Unifin's cooling products incorporate integral finned tubing. This finned surface is formed as a thick walled aluminum tube and is put through cold rotary extrusion, forming fins that are much longer in diameter than the original tube.
 
This process hardens the aluminum so the fins are very strong, resulting in optimal heat transfer efficiency and exceptional durability. It can be applied to single aluminum tubes (mono aluminum) or with the addition of a liner tube within the original aluminum tube (bi-metal).
 
With bi-metal tubing, the fin material is always aluminum and the liner is usually copper-nickel, stainless steel or titanium, with the extrusion process creating a very strong mechanical bond between the two. The result is a rugged, reliable heat transfer surface with fins that do not break, unwind or become loose with subsequent loss of capacity.

Bearing Cooling Solutions
Rotating power generation equipment relies on sleeve bearings to align their shafts. Heat, generated through friction, is picked up by the lubricating oil used in these bearings and needs to be removed. Unifin’s Shell and tube lube oil coolers work nicely to perform this function. These coolers may contain bare tubes or “low fin” tubing typically of a non-ferrous material while the shells, baffles and header parts are usually ferrous material.
 
Over time these units become fouled on the inside of the tubes as well as the exterior making cleaning and maintenance an important commitment to satisfactory cooler life. Typically these units need to be replaced after about 25 years for service depending on type of cooling water. Unifin has just the replacement solution you need.

Heavy-duty class 30 cast iron construction for long life. Large thrust face sleeve bearings for long life and minimum wear. Unifin International's favored forced oil-water operated cooler is type OFW. All designs feature the Leak Detector Type of Double Concentric tubes connected between pairs of double tube sheets. Basic design is the Non-Removable Bundle style of Fixed Tubesheet exchanger in what is termed Non-Code construction (Operating and Design Conditions do not exceed those which would invoke the A.S.M.E. Unifin's first introduction to transformer cooling problems was more than half a century ago. It began by supplying coiled tube assemblies, which were placed inside transformer tanks. Unifin's initial expertise was the manufacture of "Integral Finned Tube" which when applied to tank coolers meant increased capacity over formerly plain tube coolers. A smaller cooler resulted and the transformer rating was often increased. The internal ONW was born and Unifin's developing leadership in transformer cooling was started.
 
Industry advances meant higher ratings. Tank coolers were too small so the demand for a larger capacity external water operated cooler with natural oil convention was created.
