Forged corner caps are designed to reinforce the corner structures of gondola and open-top hopper cars. Coupler carrier wear plates come in either ASTM A-128 austenitic manganese steel or heat-treated C-1040/1045 special bar quality steel. Manganese steel plates are designed for extended service and longer life. In service, metal-to-metal contact between coupler and coupler carrier wear plate quickly produces a polished, work-hardened surface that is highly resistant to abrasion. The plates meet AAR standards.

Cover Systems - 30″ Round

ATP 30” round covers are available in steel, aluminum, and fiberglass with multiple hardware configurations. In addition to the traditional single hinge cover design, we offer a proprietary dual hinge design. The dual hinge cover has two fixed pivoting locations significantly reducing lateral movement, improving lock tab and gasket alignment, and reducing the overall back and forth play when operating the covers.
 
Fiberglass and aluminum dual hinge designs, are equipped with a camberator, located on the underside of the covers. This device allows the cover to be precision adjusted to match the curvature of a warped coaming ring, ensuring uniform gasket compression.

The traditional covering system since the late 1960’s typically utilizes four to six rectangular shaped trough covers, with three to five batten bars. These covers generally range from 7 to 13 foot in length and the outer most covers on the car have either square or round ends depending on the trough style.
 
Our conventional covers are offered in fiberglass and aluminum, utilizing stainless steel batten bars, and a hollow chamber trough gasket design. Along with material options, conventional covers are offered in multiple sizes with numerous hinge positions and locations. This flexibility creates a multitude of cover combinations available to suit your exact requirements.

Gasket System
The hollow chamber trough gasket design typically provides up to 3/4 of an inch compression between the cover and coaming of the car. The internal gasket of the batten bar overlaps the end flanges of two adjacent covers, providing a good weather resistant seal.

Operating Instructions:
With a conventional cover system, any one cover can be opened at anytime if the corresponding locks and batten bars are unlocked. There is no sequence required when opening this cover design, but it is suggested they be closed in sequence. For safety reasons ATP does not recommend walking inside an open cover, so closing in sequence can prevent this from occurring.
Opening:

  • Open the two locks associated with the corresponding cover to be opened.
  • Once locks are opened, the batten bars can be swung out of the way.
  • The desired trough cover can be opened.

Closing:

  • ATP recommends that the covers are closed in a sequential order to prevent walking inside the covers.
  • While walking on the running boards, continue down the length of the car closing the covers and/or batten bars.
  • Walk across the running boards to the lock side of the car. Walk the length of the car, locking each lock to secure the batten bars and covers in place.

Although Quantum Plus Covers are recommended in place of Quantum covers on new car builds, these covers and parts are still available upon request.
 
Patented Quantum cover designs eliminate the use of batten bars by incorporating the features of the traditional batten bar into one end of each cover. Along with the traditional opening style, this cover system can be offered in a 2-way opening design that allows the covers to be swung open from either side of the car.
 
Our Quantum covers are offered in fiberglass and aluminum, utilizing a hollow chamber gasket design. Along with material options, Quantum covers are offered in various sizes and hinge positions and locations. This flexibility creates multiple cover combinations available to suit your exact requirements.

Additional gasket attributes on Quantum covers generate a substantially better seal than traditional batten bar systems.  Our hollow chamber gasket typically creates up to ¾ of an inch compression between the cover and coaming.  Also, a mitered gasket joint bewteen adjacent covers virtually eliminates the trough gasket gap between covers (this gap is present on conventional batten bar systems).  Finally, the incorporated batten bars are gasketed, providing an excellent overlap seal with uniform gasket compression.

Operating Instructions
To open a Quantum system, the covers must be swung open in a specific sequential order, and closed in the opposite order.  To open, start with the end cover labeled “OPEN THIS COVER FIRST”.  Once this first cover is open, sequentially work your way to the other end of the car opening the covers along the way.  In order to close the system simply reverse the order in which the covers were opened.  For example: opening 1, 2, 3, 4. Closing 4, 3, 2, 1.
System Opening:

  • Roof Locks Must be Unlocked and in the Open Position
  • Sequentially Open the Covers in the Correct Order. Example: 1, 2, 3, 4

System Closing:

  • Trough Covers Must all Be Closed in Sequential Order. Example: 4, 3, 2, 1
  • All Roof Locks can be Locked in the Closed Position.

Cover Systems - Quantum Plus

Our patented Quantum Plus system (+3, +5, +6) is the premier choice for trough hatch cover systems. The +3, +5, and +6 terminology references the number of small square shaped ports in the system. These ports work similar to a batten bar, but create a substantially better seal between intermediate covers and can act as loading or inspection ports. The length of these ports typically reduces the overall length of the intermediate covers making each cover considerably lighter and easier to operate.
 
Quantum Plus utilizes a unique shared bracketing design where Plus covers and intermediate covers share hinge brackets. This creates a lower application cost due to fewer components, and allows the cover system to follow wavy trough coamings, while staying properly aligned to create the best sealing system in the industry.
 
Our Quantum Plus covers are offered in fiberglass and aluminum, with both standard and low-profile designs. Along with material options, Quantum Plus covers are offered in multiple lengths in order to suit a variety of trough lengths.

Gasket System
The Quantum Plus “Triple Seal” sealing system is the best sealing system in the industry.  The transverse seal between covers or the “Triple Seal” begins with the seal created by the port cover overlap channel gasket sealing on the intermediate cover flange – Seal#1.  secondly, this same gasket creates another seal across the flat of the intermediate cover – Seal#2.  Lastly, an additional port cover flange gasket creates yet another seal across the flat of the intermediate cover – Seal#3.  Our hollow chamber longitudinal gasket typically creates up to ¾ of an inch compression between the cover and coaming. Additionally, to virtually eliminate the gaps in the longitudinal trough gasket between adjacent covers, a mitered gasket joint configuration is utilized – (Q+Miter).

Operating Instructions
On The Quantum Plus system, like a conventional batten bar system, will allow the covers to be opened in any order.  However, the port covers on one or both ends of the desired cover must be opened first (much like batten bars).  When closing, the Quantum Plus design will only allow the operator to close and lock the covers in the proper order.
Opening:

  • Open the locks associated with the cover you need to open.
  • Once locks are opened, the small port covers can be swung out of the way.
  • The desired trough cover can then be opened.

Closing:

  • First close the intermediate covers adjacent to the Plus covers.
  • Once the Intermediates are closed, the Plus covers can then be closed.
  • The entire system can now be locked into place.

Available for 30 and 45 degree slope sheets, Schaefer's Crossridge Bracefeet are designed to be welded to the lower end of standard 3 by 5 inch rectangular tubing, and the assembly to be bolted to the crossridge. Then, when needed, brake replacement is simple and quick. Schaefer Bracefeet meet AAR specification M-126, Grade B.
