Conductor Rail

Faiveley Brecknell Willis are specialists in the field of electrification.  Our conductor rail features a hard wearing stainless steep cap which is attached to a highly conductive aluminium by a patented welding process. The result is an excellent electrical adhesion between the two metals and a firm mechanical attachment which eliminates all chance of separation of the capping. The aluminium is protected from any arc damage in the vicinity of the collector shoes by a wrap-around portion of the cap.
 
The conductor rail can be arranged for the current collector to pick up current as a top-running, under-running or side-running system. Faiveley Brecknell Willis designs and supplies all the parts needed for a complete conductor rail system including ramps, expansion joints, insulator supports, cable connections, flexible traction cables, and off-load switchgear.

Convection Recuperators

Convection recuperators (also referred to as "flue" or "canal" recuperators) are tubular heat exchangers that utilize convection heat transfer to preheat combustion air or gas for the purpose of saving fuel. By recovering heat from the hot waste gas exiting a furnace and transferring it to the combustion air feeding the burners, fuel usage can be reduced by an average of twenty-five percent (25%), and in many cases, greater savings are realized. Waste gas temperatures entering convection recuperators are usually in the 1500°F to 2000°F range, and combustion air preheat temperatures are usually in the 800°F to 1200°F range.
 
For high temperature industrial furnaces, such as steel reheat furnaces, recuperators are valuable tools for increasing furnace efficiency. Up to sixty percent (60%) of the available energy in the fuel may be carried out of the furnace in the waste gas, therefore, heat recovery is essential for fuel conservation and economical operation. With fuel costs rising, recuperation is certain to play a vital role in the future.
 
Convection recuperators are comprised of tube bundles with the tubes welded to the tube sheets to assure gas tightness. Tube arrangement, tube material and flow pattern are based on the specifics of each individual application, including temperatures, compositions, pressure drop limits and space availability. In a typical design, the hot waste gas from the furnace flows horizontally through the recuperator, passing outside of vertical tubes. Combustion air en route to the burners makes two or more passes inside the tubes in a counter cross-flow pattern.

Thermal Transfer Corporation employs a team of skilled fabricators, certified welders, and degreed engineers with an average of 15 years’ service. We have the expertise to handle most any large fabrication projects. We are specialists in high alloy stainless steel and tube assemblies as well as large carbon steel fabrications and assemblies. We build ammonia piping skid assemblies for the NOx reduction systems designed by Hamon Research-Cottrell. We also manufacture valve train piping systems and combustion control units. Our facility is ISO:9001 compliant and maintains ASME “U”, “S’, and “R” stamps as well as UL-508A for control panel fabrication. The quality of our products is assured through the use of every appropriate NDE testing process; including X-ray, dye penetrant, hydrostatic and pneumatic pressure testing.
 
Thermal Transfer Corporation is located near Pittsburgh, PA and our facilities include a 146,000 sq. ft. fabricating shop and a 14,000 sq. ft. office building. We fabricate our products in one of the best-equipped manufacturing facilities in the industry. Our location provides us access to rail and barge shipping in addition to truck transportation.

Large utility hydrogen cooled generators sometimes require a source of excitation power from an external source. This power is created from a small air-cooled generator which has its own system of cooling equipment. Unifin’s coolers in the air-cooled generator range from a single cooler horizontal design to a multi cooler vertical mount design. They remove the heat generated by electrical losses as well as frictional windage losses maintaining appropriate temperatures in the generator to protect insulation and integrity of the generator. They tend to become fouled on the tubeside and require periodic cleaning to maintain peak performance. These coolers, depending on age, may have the older “spiral” fin or may contain the newer platefin design. Most cases, when the coolers are replaced, it is more economical to replace with the modern design if it does not already exist.

In addition to Thermal Transfer Corporation's indirect fired heaters, we also offer heaters for refractory lined vessels such as ladles, tundishes, vacuum degassing vessels, molds, induction furnaces, etc. These heaters preheat and/or dry out the vessel's internal refractory lining prior to the introduction of molten metal. They can be supplied with standard combustion systems, recuperative systems, or oxy-fuel systems. Updraft Louvres
Unifin offers an option for an updraft louvre design. This option would be selected where there is a high probability of air recirculation that is either caused by the proximity of obstructions to normal air flow or that the site environment is conducive to this occurrence. The updraft louvres assists in the upward and outward movement of warm air with the benefit of reducing the chance that the warm air may recirculate back into the inlet side of the cooler, and thereby reduce the performance of the cooler and hence, the transformer.
 
Hinged Fan Panels
Maintenance is crucial to optimizing the life of a transformer cooler so optional hinged fan panels make it easy to open the cooler and pressure-wash the fin surface.

Fans and motors for Unifin Transformer Coolers are selected based on exacting specifications and sound characteristics providing optimal efficiency developed from years of firsthand industry experience.
 
Paint Finishes
While able to apply many different paints; two lend themselves to transformer cooling applications. Gas Coolers

Thermal Transfer Corporation gas coolers find the widest application in the area of environmental control, where hot dirty emissions from industrial processes must be cooled for entry into pollution control equipment. Most of our coolers employ ambient air as the cooling medium, although water-cooled units are furnished as well. A prime consideration in the design of all Thermal Transfer Corporation coolers is the necessity for keeping the heat transfer surfaces clean: arrangements are largely selected to allow continuous in situ cleaning utilizing soot blowers, shot or chain cleaning systems. Combined cleaning methods can be used for especially heavy carryover situations.
 
A typical gas cooler is designed with the hot waste gas flowing vertically down over the outside of horizontal tubes, while cooling air passes inside the tubes. A large volume of cooling air is usually provided by multiple vane axial or panel fans mounted on the side of the cooler. A complete system is normally supplied including tube bundles, outer shells, cooling fans, ducts, hoppers, structural supports, walkways, etc. Other cooler arrangements and orientations are also available including designs with the hot waste gas passing inside the tubes.
